Australia's captain Set to Play a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on November 21 in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.

"We know that time is getting short and various factors at play, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
