The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
