Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
